Self-Pleasure
A fellow author recently lamented about his tendency to focus on the negative. He said that if he received 100 reviews and 99 of them were good, he would invariably dwell on the single bad one.
He’s not alone. I think we all tend to do this – in our jobs, ours lives, our relationships. The question is, why? Why does that one dissonant nay ring out above the chorus of yays?
Bad reviews – any criticism, really – can be painful, I admit. After receiving a few, I felt the sting. To put things in perspective, I trolled a few sites and checked out the reviews of some of my favorite authors, veritable gods and goddesses in my literary world. And guess what? They got some bad reviews, too. (* gasp! *) At least now I know I’m in good company 😉
The bottom line is, you can’t please everyone, so concentrate on pleasing yourself. If you don’t like who you are, how can you expect anyone else to?
(ah, come on now, what kind of self-pleasure were YOU thinking of?)
