Groundhog Day

I’ve lived in Pennsylvania all my life, so I don’t have a feel for how the rest of the world views February 2nd, or if they even realize it’s a holiday. Let me just say that in PA, it’s kind of a big deal.
For those of you who aren’t familiar, this is the time of year when a woodchuck (Punxsutawney {PUNK-suh-TAWN-ee} Phil) comes out of hibernation (is forcibly dragged) at the butt-crack of dawn to predict the next six weeks of weather. If he sees his shadow, more wintery weather is expected. If he doesn’t, it’s supposed to mean an early spring.
I’ll let you in on a little secret, though: real Pennsylvanians don’t believe that. The whole thing is really just an excuse to stay up all night, drink beer, and dance the polka in sub-freezing temperatures. If we want to know what the weather is going to be like, we check the Farmer’s Almanac 😉
