Shelter from the Storm

Recap

Jake asked, “What brings you to Pine Ridge?”

You replied: "Just passing through, but the storm made that tricky. Thought I’d stop for a bit."

Jake nods slowly, his blue eyes softening as he takes in your response. “Smart move,” he says, his voice steady and reassuring. “Storms around here can be unpredictable. Best to wait it out somewhere warm.”

He sets a frothy mug in front of you, the golden glow of the pub lights catching the foam. You reach for your purse, but before you can pull out your wallet, he takes a step back and puts his hand up. “This one’s on me,” he adds. “Welcome to Pine Ridge.”

Your first thought is to protest, but something in his eyes tells you it’s pointless. “Thanks,” you murmur instead. As you reach for the drink, the hum of conversation in the room feels muted, as though the pub itself is giving you a moment to settle in. Your fingers brush the cool glass, and for a brief second, you feel grounded—like you’ve found a temporary anchor in the chaos of your journey.

“Do you get many travelers passing through?” you ask, your question a little softer than you intended.

Jake chuckles softly. “Not many, no. We’re a little too off the beaten path for that.”

Before he can elaborate, another brother speaks up from across the bar. His expression is contemplative, his features more serious than the others. His tone is quieter too but carries weight, as if he only speaks when he has something important to say. “Storms have a funny way of forcing you to stop,” he says. “Sometimes, they even blow you exactly where you’re meant to be.”

The man’s gaze is steady and assessing. He leans back slightly, his presence calmer than the others, but no less commanding.

“That’s Shane,” Jake explains, shooting his brother a look that’s more amused than annoyed. “Don’t mind him. He’s always reading between the lines.”

“Only when it matters,” Shane replies, his voice low and unhurried.

You glance between them, unsure what to make of Shane’s quiet intensity. There’s no teasing or challenge in his words, just a simple observation that feels personal.

Jake clears his throat, pulling your attention back to him. “Don’t read too much into it. Pine Ridge is just a good place to catch your breath, that’s all.”

From the dartboard, another brother chimes in, his tone laced with dry humor. “Depends on how long you want to breathe,” says Sean, glancing over with a faint smirk.

Jake sighs, shaking his head. “Sean thinks he’s funny,” he says. “He’s not.”

“Only because I’m right,” Sean replies, his sharp gaze flicking toward you. “Some people aren’t cut out for Pine Ridge.”

Jake snorts, his voice carrying a hint of warning. “She hasn’t even finished her drink, Sean.”

Laughter ripples through the bar, easing the tension. You take another sip of your stout, letting the warmth of the room sink in. Maybe this was what you needed—a place to pause, to think, to figure out what’s next.

Jake leans on the bar again, his tone easy but curious. “So, what about you?” he asks. “Is this just a stop along the way, or do you think Pine Ridge might have something more to offer?”

The room feels quieter now, the storm rattling faintly against the windows. The brothers watch with a mix of curiosity and something else—like they’re waiting to see what you’ll do next.
