Something You Didnt Expect

Recap:
Jake asked, “So what about you? Is this just a stop along the way, or do you think Pine Ridge might have something more to offer?”
You replied: “I don't know yet. Maybe I'll stick around and see."
“Maybe there’s something here I didn’t expect.”
Jake’s brow lifts slightly, and a slow smile spreads across his face. “Fair enough,” he says, sliding a glass across the bar. “Sometimes, the unexpected turns out to be exactly what you need.”
Ian leans against the bar, his grin quick and mischievous. “See? You’ve already figured out what the rest of us took years to learn.”
“Years?” Sean mutters from the dartboard, his tone dry but tinged with amusement. “Some of us still haven’t learned.”
“Which explains a lot,” Ian shoots back, unbothered.
The brothers’ banter is easy, their teasing laced with humor but never cruel. It feels natural, like they’ve been doing this forever. You glance around the pub, taking in the laughter, the warmth, the way everyone seems to belong.
“Don’t mind them,” Jake says, his tone steady. “Pine Ridge is good at keeping secrets. But it’s better at helping people figure them out.”
“Or tripping over them,” Michael adds from his corner, his sharp blue eyes cutting to Ian with a faint smirk.
“Hey, if you’re not tripping, you’re not trying,” Ian retorts with a shrug. He turns back to you, his gaze curious but not intrusive. “So, what’s the verdict so far? Do we live up to the rumors?”
Before you can answer, Shane’s quiet voice cuts through the conversation. “Pine Ridge isn’t about rumors,” he says, his tone reflective. “It’s about finding what you’re looking for, even if you don’t know you’re looking for it.”
The big, grumpy looking guy sitting farthest from you grunts softly, but whether in agreement or disagreement, you don't know.
The room stills for a moment, the words sinking in. There’s a weight to Shane’s statement that feels almost tangible, as though the brothers have lived it in ways they aren’t saying outright.
Ian claps his hands together, breaking the tension with a grin. “All right, philosopher. Let’s not scare her off with all this deep talk.”
Jake chuckles, shaking his head. “What he’s trying to say—in his own way—is that Pine Ridge has a way of surprising people. You never know what you’ll find unless you stick around long enough to look.”
You glance at Jake, his calm blue eyes steady on yours, and feel a flicker of something you can’t quite name. Maybe it’s the storm outside. Maybe it’s the warmth of the pub. Or maybe it’s the faint, impossible sense that you were meant to be here.
Ian nudges the pint glass closer to you, his grin playful. “So, what do you think? Another round? A game of darts? Or are you ready to share what brought you here?”
