Every Story Starts Somewhere

Recap:
Ian asked, “So what's your story? Or is it a secret?”
You replied: "It's complicated. Let's leave it at that for now."
Ian’s brow furrows slightly, his grin fading into something quieter, more reflective. “Complicated’s okay,” he says, his voice soft but sure. “You’re in good company here.”
His words settle over you like a blanket—unexpected, but not unwelcome. Something about his tone feels genuine, like he’s not just saying it to fill the silence.
“You’re not wrong,” another brother chimes in wryly from the dartboard, his voice carrying the faint edge of humor. “This place practically runs on complicated.”
“Speak for yourself, Sean,” Ian shoots back, his grin returning. “I’m an open book.”
Sean snorts, his sharp blue eyes cutting toward Ian. “Yeah? And what chapter are we on? ‘Bad Decisions Volume Three’?”
The banter draws a laugh from Jake, who shakes his head as he pours another pint. “Ignore them,” he says, his smile softening as he meets your gaze. “They mean well—most of the time.”
The brother sitting farthest from you grunts softly, his large frame casting a shadow as he leans back against the wall. His blue eyes are like ice chips, discreetly watching over everything. Unlike the others, he doesn't look particularly friendly. You instinctively know he’s the oldest, and that he doesn’t say much, especially around outsiders.
The warmth of the pub hums around you, but the quiet sincerity in Ian’s tone lingers. He leans on the bar, his blue eyes still watching you with interest—not the nosy kind, but the kind that feels… invested.
“Complicated doesn’t mean bad,” he says after a beat, his voice thoughtful. “It just means there’s more to the story.”
Jake sets a fresh glass down nearby, his hands pausing as he leans on the counter. “Everyone’s got a story,” he says, his tone calm but steady. “Some are just incomplete, you know? Waiting for the next chapter to tell.”
You glance between them, unsure how to respond. The brothers’ presence is magnetic, and their words pull at something buried deep inside you. Maybe they’re right—maybe complicated is just another way of saying there’s more to figure out.
“Jake loves his stories,” Ian says with a grin, breaking the moment. “Especially the ones where everything works out in the end.”
“Hey,” Jake says, his smile turning wry. “There’s nothing wrong with believing things happen for a reason.”
Ian rolls his eyes, but there’s no real argument in his expression. “You’re gonna scare her off with all that fate talk.”
Jake shrugs. “Not fate, exactly. Just… possibility. Sometimes there’s a purpose to those things life throws in your path.”
“Like storms,” Ian adds with a crooked smile. “Or pubs.”
The words hang between you, light but meaningful, their easy banter wrapping around a deeper but unspoken bond.
Shane’s quiet voice cuts through the warmth of the conversation. “Sometimes,” he says from his corner, “the hardest part of a new adventure is deciding to start.”
Jake smiles, catching your eye again. “You don’t have to figure it all out tonight,” he says. “Sometimes just being here is enough.”
Jake leans forward slightly, his expression soft but curious. “So, what about you?” he asks, his voice low and steady. “Are you just passing through, or do you think Pine Ridge might have something waiting for you?”
