Sometimes Fate Knows Best

Recap

Ian asked, “C’mon, it’s gotta be one of the three. What’s the story?”

You replied: “Fate, I think. Sometimes you just end up exactly where you’re supposed to be.”

Ian raises his eyebrows, clearly delighted. “Now that’s an answer,” he says, his grin widening. “See? I knew there was something special about you.”

Jake smirks as he sets a glass on the bar, his movements calm and measured. “Yeah, right. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Pine Ridge version of the Long Island Medium.”

“I’m just saying what we’re all thinking,” Ian counters, turning back to you with a twinkle in his eye. “Fate works in mysterious ways, doesn’t it? Like bringing you here tonight, for instance. There’s a reason you ended up in the best pub, with the best beer, and…” He waggles his eyebrows and pauses for dramatic effect, “…the best company.”

“Debatable,” Sean mutters from the dartboard, his tone dry. “The jury’s still out on the company part.”

Ian places a hand over his heart, feigning deep offense. “See what I deal with? No respect for fate—or me, apparently.”

Jake shakes his head, a chuckle rumbling low in his chest. “Ignore him,” he says, his blue eyes warm as they meet yours. “His philosophizing is only marginally better than his bartending. But there’s some truth in what he’s saying.”

“Some?” Ian echoes, his grin turning mischievous.

Jake ignores him, his tone thoughtful. “Sometimes, people end up here because they’re supposed to. Pine Ridge has a way of pulling you in and giving you what you didn’t know you needed.”

The room quiets briefly, the weight of his words sinking in. You glance around the pub, the warmth of the lights and the quiet hum of conversation creating an atmosphere that feels both familiar and extraordinary.

Michael leans against the wall near the dartboard, his sharp blue eyes considering. “Waxing a bit poetic, aren’t you, Jake?”

Jake shrugs, unbothered. “It’s not about romance. It’s about finding your place.”

Shane’s quiet voice cuts in from his corner, steady but sure. “Sometimes, fate is just another word for the choices you didn’t realize you were ready to make.”

Ian claps his hands together, breaking the reflective moment with his usual energy. “There you go,” he says, grinning at Shane. “Fate, choices—it all leads back to the best pint this side of the Atlantic. And let’s face it—the view is pretty scenic.”

Jake sighs, though the corner of his mouth lifts in a faint smile. “He’s not wrong about the pint,” he says, turning back to you. “But the question is, what do you think brought you here?”
